Post response to Jessica McClean's Conjoined Twins

I think one of the reasons conjoined twins have become looked at recently is because of our growing medical technology. Physicians want to understand more about the causes and are challenged with the task of separating the bodies if requested. Another main reason is the rarity of conjoined twins. One particular example I thought of from a reality TV show was, Abby and Brittany. These girls have two heads and one body. When I think about conjoined twins, I often think about their possible restrictions to most things. But, these two girls are able to drive, they go to college, and are pursuing careers. Abby controls the left side whereas Brittany controls the right side of the body. I think it’s incredible to see their story because even though they are conjoined, they really do all the things teenagers and young adults might do. They are not being held back from this, they embrace it, although I’m sure they have their hardships at times. There are still endless questions as to how they got about their lives in society that we as “normal” individuals may take for granted every day.

  1. It's awesome to see instances that defy your beliefs about something. I think your example definitely demonstrates that being a conjoined twin doesn't have to hold you back from doing what everyone else does. This is really cool to see and hear. Sometimes I am skeptical about these reality TV shows and if every situation is actually how people live. For this story, I especially hope it is the truth because that is really great to see!

  2. I think you made a great point of how corrupt our view of "normal" is in society, that we expect those who we think are inferior to us to fail and struggle with succeeding in life; just because of a physical trait that they were born with and is rare or even something that they actively decided to alter and change. In Abby and Brittany's case, they proved how actions are stronger than a practiced and fixed ideology of imbecilic people. At the same time, they proved what we are usually uncomfortable with confronting and admitting; that we do judge people by how they look and attach significance to that judgement. We determine how people will think, act, behave, and in this case succeed in life just because of a distortion of their body.
