Professionalism, are Tattoos Okay?

After our in class conversation I'd like to ask the class on the whole how they truly feel about tattoos.  Tattoos have been a point of controversy for decades.  In a day and age where we as a society are becoming more progressive and accepting of body modifications like tattoos.  It goes back to the concept of professionalism.  I think people are going to approach this matter from different angles.  We as a society are trying to judge people less as we strive for equally, would we find it distracting? Shouldn't the most important part of being a good teacher come from actual talent and overall competence instead of physical appearance.  So with respect to this, I'd like to know your opinions regarding how professional a body modification like a tattoo is in the workplace.  Why do you feel tattoos have such a negative connotation in the workplace right now, and how would you go about changing this?

  1. I strongly believe that the most important thing we should consider about teachers is their overall achievements and knowledge. A teachers purpose to us is obviously to learn from them and take the valuable messages they have to give us. A teacher shouldn't be judged on their appearance, that's not really what maters. Is it really going to change what we learn from them and how valuable it is to us? Also a proposed problem is that tattoos are distracting, but wouldn't they only be distracting for a little bit? Sure when you first meet your teachers and they have a tattoo you are going to be interested, but after looking at it every day for a significant amount of time, you will get bored of it, and not find it as distracting. Do you agree? I feel as if this is how the human works, we see something for a while but eventually we get bored.

  2. I think that professionalism is important. And if there is someone who is professional, yet they have tattoos and piercings, I don't think it should matter. I had one professor who had tattoos and some piercings. Yet, he was one of the best professors I have ever had. I really don't think that bosses should judge on appearance, but unfortunately, our society is still like that. We don't look beyond. We just see the outside.
