I think tattoos are an interesting subject with regards to the idea of freaks. What society classifies as freakish can change over time as social norms alter. Not too many years ago, I would classify tattoos as a freakish and an unusual part of society. Today, they've become a part of common culture. The consequences of getting a tattoo in the past brought about permanent scrutiny. An elderly individual that had gotten a tattoo earlier in their life would be viewed differently. Nowadays, tattoos have become so common that there are practically no social consequences to them. I'm interested in seeing what the perception of tattoos will be in the future.

I didn't see this post on tattoos until after I posted my own. But in regards to your post, I would still say that tattoos still have a bit a taboo associated with them even though more people have begun to accept them then previously. They are increasing in our adolescent generation that we ourselves are living in. It is interesting to see that even though they are on the up-rise or mainstream, there is still a certain taboo associated with it.
ReplyDeleteI can firmly agree with your point that tattoos used to be shunned by society and are slowly being accepted into mainstream society. The idea that someone would desecrate their body in "such a way" was once considered highly offensive. However in today's society tattoos are becoming more and more commonplace. While some work places and passers by may still look down upon those with tattoos, I feel it is unfair to judge someone in such a way. It is their body, and therefore, theirs to enrich with the freedom of expression if they wish so. With this mindset I feel that, we as a society will gradually move closer to accepting those with tattoos, and move away from a more conservative attitude.
