Professionalism

Today in class we talked about professionalism and when tattoos in the work place would be acceptable. As an early childhood/ childhood major I personally do not think that tattoos that are visible are acceptable in schools. I understand that most of the time a tattoo has meaning behind it but there are many places that a tattoo could go that would not be visible. In grades K-3 or 4 I know that if a student was to see a tattoo they would want to know all about it, especially if neither of their parents had on. this would then distract the class from what they are supposed to be learning about. Im not saying that students should be sheltered and not told about tattoo, im just saying they are not professional and should not be in the schools.

  1. I realize that tattoos in the workplace are a very controversial issue. Tattoos could be a distraction in the learning environment. Despite all of this I still feel like tattoos may not be acceptable yet, but we as a society are moving towards a more progressive viewpoint that would gradually begin to allow tattoos if they aren't extremely extravagant or over the top.

  2. I do think that tatoos are still not acceptable in many professions. But, in my opinion if they are small and appropriate (no profanity or nudity) then it shouldnt be a big deal. I realize this is very controversial and although I think tatoos would be okay in schools, say if someone had one on their wrist or foot. But if an individual has a sleeve of tatoos then it gets into the whole distraction aspect.

  3. While I think that your argument is valid, I have to disagree. Besides the fact that the focus should be on the teacher's method and effectiveness of teaching, rather than their image, if children are not exposed to tattoos, they truly are missing out on a form of art. Children are curious and are going to ask many questions to the teacher and to the parent about the tattoo, but this should be seen in a more positive way. Art is necessary in education, and if a teacher can reach a student with a tattoo and expose them to art and teach them something from this, then I disagree that tattoos should not be visible to young children. While a part of me does agree that covering up tattoos to display professionalism is not a bad thing, I don't think that those who do have tattoos and wish to express themselves should have to cover up all the time.
